TLS in Construction

VDC – Visual Design Construction

Using LiDAR on Construction Projects

From Ground-Breaking to Ribbon Cutting

Create 2D and 3D LiDAR images quickly, affordably and regularly with RIEGL TLS VZ scanners, and support your project management team on complex construction projects from beginning to end.

  • Win more work. Show clients that you plan LiDAR scans as an integral part of the overall construction schedule at key project milestones.

  • Confirm what is designed to what is constructed timely - at each stage.

  • Compare point-clouds to CAD designs to assist with clash detection analyses, reducing major tear-outs and costly delays.

  • Monitor and document progress of multiple subcontractors on complex projects.

  • Scan underground utilities before they are covered for future maintenance and operations.

  • Scan interior wall structures and electrical work before drywall and plaster covers beams, and to confirm plumb.

  • Confirm floor flatness for buildings where this is essential such as laboratories, hospitals, large convention areas, etc.

  • Know where water will go during heavy rains and request specific grading and other measures such as hardscaping and curbs, and plantings to prevent flooding.

  • Avoid legal disputes by having a “digital twin” record of what exists at regular intervals.

Advantages of RIEGL Ultimate LiDAR

Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) Systems

Speed and Ease of Use

  • Collect 1.2 million points per second (PPS) (1200 kHz / 1.2 Hz), with an effective measurement rate (meas./sec) of 500,000 (PPS).

  • RIEGL TLS scanners require only one operator.

  • One-button scanning combines with RIEGL’s automatic registration processing minimizes opportunities for user error.

  • On-site equipment set-up takes only minutes.

  • Each 360-degree scan takes only 45 seconds (medium resolution) to 60 seconds (high resolution).

  • Photo images are taken simultaneously!

Accuracy, Precision and Range

  • Users typically achieve 5 mm or greater accuracy, and 3 mm or better precision.

  • GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) features on the VZ series include Real Time Kinetics (RTK) Global Positioning System (GPS) that enhances the positional data, ie where each point is on the earth to approx. 2 cm geospatial accuracy.

  • Different TLS scanner have different ranges making them suitable for specific types of applications:

    • VZ-400i measures up to 800 meters – perfect for typical construction sites and crash/crime scenes

    • VZ-2000i measures up to 2500 meters – commonly used for small open pit mines

    • VZ-4000 measures up to 4000 meters – commonly used for medium or large open pit mines

    • VZ-6000 measures up to 6000 meters - perfect for larger geographic areas like glaciers, mountains, forestry or agriculture

  • Detailed datasheets on each of the VZ product line are available at www.riegl.com

  • Videos showing the RIEGL VZ and other RIEGL scanners on various applications can be found at the RIEGL YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/riegllidar

Flexibility

  • The RIEGL TLS scanners are rugged, lightweight, and easy to transport in their wheeled hardcase.

  • The provided heavy-duty tripod takes less than a minute, and allows scans to be performed even in windy conditions.

  • Different platforms enable users to control range by going higher or lower.  Users can place the scanner directly on or near ground level in areas that are unstable (like archeology sites, narrow roadsides with steep hills, canyons, mines or caves) when using a tripod is not ideal.

  • The TLS is self-leveling.

  • LiDAR scans can be performed in various lighting and weather conditions – nighttime, rain, fog, extreme temperatures, etc.

  • RIEGL software tools allow you filter out fog or rain, or people or vehicles in the point-clouds.

Safety

  • Remote controls allow users to capture data from a safe distance when necessary, such as in a high traffic area, or in inclement weather.

  • Eye safety is of critical importance, especially on construction sites or where emergency personnel are on the scene.  RIEGL’s TLS units are rated “eye-safe” Laser Class 1.
